The role of woman.
Not sure what you mean.
Now, if you mean in the plays, he had women characters. They were evil, they were good. They were villains, they were heroines. He pretty much went the full spectrum.
Naturally, women couldn't be on the stage. So all the female parts were played by males. In that respect, women had no role in his plays at all.
If you're talking in the world at large, I suppose they were like pets held in somewhat of an esteem. Women didn't have much, but they were on a bit of a pedestal.

Which women?

Aristocratic women were fairly well-educated; they sponsored many famous poets and writers. They could not play a formal role in politics (except for Queen Elizabeth, of course) but many of them influenced politics informally, through their husbands or with their own wealth and power.

Middle-class women helped run businesses, and they often became wealthy in their own right even though laws limited their power to hold and dispose of property.

Lower-class women shared the same burdens as men of the lower class.
