Ok homework question right?????c'mon dont lie.
Ok here it is in a nut shell,
the south and north were at odds with each other, some of this was on slavery but most of it was on the economical ideas on where Gov't should place the nations money and interests.
The north had more seats in congress at this time(per capita of how many voting persons per state there were living in them)since the north had more voting persons in them they held more congressional seats in the Gov't,while the sourthern part of the United States had fewer people(that could vote)in them giving them less representation in the senate and congress. So the the southerm states came up with an idea of using the number of slaves to get them more house seats but not representing them as a voting population(no rights etc)this was seen as an outrage by the north and the abolisionists in the northern states so the resentments of north and south increased to a point of attack(Ft.Sumtner) in the south which was the start of the civil war.slavery only became an issue after the fact..but I believe this is what you should be skimming through in your history books and what your teacher is looking for

I can't believe the stupidity of some of these answers...
The American Civil War (which actually started around 1855 during the conflict over the Kansas-Nebraska Act) was an war fought between the United States Army and the armed forces of the (traitorous) slave-holding Southern states which in a fit of anger over the election of Republican Abraham Lincoln, presumed to commit the illegal act of seceding from the Union.
There were, of course, various issues involved, but they basically centered around the question of the right of one segment of the population (Southern whites) to hold another section of the population (black Americans) as slaves. Every other issue either revolved around this or was insignificant.
Politically, we're still fighting the same issues, with chattel slavery having been replaced by social programs like welfare and affirmative action to keep blacks (and other minorities) in servile bondage; once again, we find the Democrats (for the most part) in the position of supporting such bondage.

The war was over the secession of the Southern States from the Union that is America. They wanted to seceed out of fears that slaves would be emancipated, which they were. So they set out to form a new nation, and the northern states set out to keep America whole, and not split it two. The north won, and that is why America is simply one country, instead of two

Tsk tsk tsk
Edit: Fair enough, the guy above me gave the best answer.
The US or The North won. The US won in my opinon because of 3 men: Abraham Lincoln the president of the US, U.S. Grant Commander of the US Army and William Tecumseh Sherman the Commander of US Forces in the west. Meade was US commander in the east.
After a series of failed commanders Lincoln appointed Grant commander of all US forces. Grant who had been commander in the west appointed Sherman, his subordinate to take his place as western commander.
Both men understood manuever warfare, they knew that to defeat the rebels they had to as Grant called it "Keep the ball moving." That is us the North's superior manpower, manufacturing base and rail and road system to keep constant pressure on the rebel armies. Working independantly but simultaneously the two US armies systematiclly destroyed the rebels ability and more importantly it's will to fight.
Sherman's cavalry commander was an Ohioan named Philip Sheridan. Sheridan used his 5000 man force to cut the rebels road and destroy their rail lines leaving the rebel with no way to reinforce or resupply one another. While the Infantry under Sherman "Grabbed hold of the rebels and wouldn't let them go."
In the east the Army of the Potomac the US Army kept constant pressure on the Army of Northern Virgina the rebels. Finally after a brutal winter battle at Petersburg VA with his army weak and surrounded the rebel commander Robert E Lee surrendered on April 9 1865 at Appomatax Court House.
There if you don't get a B there's something wrong at your school.

The North (USA) wanted to keep the union together & (at least some) abolish slavery.
The South (CSA) wanted their own separate country & to keep slavery.

The war was a question of the 10th amendment.
The rhetoric was slavery. A red herring.
Lincoln was an excellent politician, little more.
