I think one can consider a man "independent" as soon as he breaks away from his parents and begins to support himself before he marries. An "independent woman" applies to the fact that a woman is not dependent on a man for support. Typically, but not always, in the past, women were dependent on their man. Thus, women's liberation "created" the independent woman.

In reality, no one is truly independent even as our society pushes that this is how we should be. Everyone is dependent on everyone else.

The fact that men do not need to state their independence is because it has never been an issue for men ... they are considered independent automatically.

Women state their independence often because they feel they need to... men don't

Hope that answers your question ... obviously its a bit deeper than that ... but you should know more about that than I do ... as I am only an independent MAN.

Yeah, why not? But to get technical here I don't think there are any truly independent men OR women. We are all dependent on people and things by nature although some need less and some need more.

yes it does, an independent man is a real man who is not dependent on other people, a man who knows how to take care of his business, who has a purpose in life and who is capable of taking care of himself and his family. we do not use the phase "independent man'' b'cos we expect that of every man but we don't expect that of every woman that's why we use it mainly for women. however nowadays you'll find some men who are very dependent on their partners. something that wasn't the case in the past.

If you know a man that can go through life without having any help from any woman then you have found your independent man.

i have heard of many cases of men being on their own
i don't know how you would rate how successful they can be
but in the scheme of things, i see no reason why a man and woman cannot have the same freedoms to live "independently"

by independent you mean an unmarried man? sure, I am a living example, I practice celibacy, not an easy thing for sure, but I do everything to support myself in every thing that we do to survive, and I do it alone and quiet happy too!

No! Read John Donne..."no man is an island, entire of itself".

Applies to the womenfolk too, BTW
