I have a gas heater and every time we light the pilot, it lights but then we let go of the pilot button and the pilot goes out. Anybody know why?

It needs a new thermo coupler.. a small rod that is heated by the pilot light that conects to the gas valve..easy to replace any hardware store has one.

it is probably the thermocoupler.some are pretty universal others will be a pilot/thermocoupler assembly specific to a brand or series.if it hasn't been lit in a while hold the button down a while (a minute or minute and a half and release slowly)if the tip of the pilot isn't turning red or the flame is flickering call your gas co. or repairman.

First dumb question I'm going to ask. Is the gas turned on?
Next, how old is the unit?
]Next, when you light it, do you hear any noise, like a small WHUMP! explosion?
Next, have you called the gas company? They will usually come out, check your unit and start it either for free or for a nominal charge which will be a lot less if your unit explodes and levels the rest of the block.

You may need to hold it longer, or you may be running out of butane. Check to see how much you still have in your tank. If there is an ample amount in there, contact your gas provider to come and look at the situation. This is not a "do it yourself" job. Safety comes first.
