I am with Janice B. except that not all indentured servants were criminals. My history prof says that 2/3 of all immigrants to the colonies came via indentured servitude. Someone in the colonies would pay the fare for the travel to the colonies, then the immigrant would have to "work off" the amount paid according to person he was indentured to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentured_servants

I don't believe there was slavery as we perceive it now. I believe there were indentured servants however. These were people that were shipped here after a criminal conviction and then they were sold for a specific number of years. They did this instead of using jails. This was a form of slavery as these people were under the total control of those who bought them.
