He can read at 3rd or 4th grade level. Need to find books with real characters (no talking inanimate objects or animals) that are not children. Hoping to find some with great pictures that cover subjects more pertinent to a 23 year old man. He is interested in airplanes, drawing, and biology, but of course I am looking for any book that reads at an elementary level that would be more appropriate for an older audience. Any ideas?

Usbourne books, a company that uses home parties similar to Tupperware and the like, have a large selection of science and technology books, well written and illustrated. The have text for a variety of grade levels, but none of it is written in a way that sounds childish or condescending. They have some wonderful biographies as well on several historical figures. You can look them up online to find a rep near you or order from the website.

Another place to look is Scholastic books. You may remember them as the company that sent home those book flyers every month. You can order from thier current catalog online, it is broken down by grade level and again, they often have great fiction, tech and biographies.

It will be tougher to find books at that level that do not have children as central characters. I would suggest looking for adaptations of classic novels done for younger students.

A last suggestion is to look for books published by Doris Kindserly publishing (DK Books). This is another company that produces top notch science and tech based books, with wonderful illustrations and photos, written for the mid-grade school level.

Hope these help!!

i know it is fantastically effortless, yet have you ever examine any of Jane Austen's works? they do no longer look to be too complicated to envision, and at an analogous time as they do no longer look to be cutting-edge like the Sisterhood or Gossip lady, they are nonetheless very appropriate for today. =D additionally, the Bronte sisters had some stable books. a sprint greater gothic than Austen, yet Jane Eyre has no vampires or something like that, at an analogous time as nonetheless ultimate mysterious. :)
