Retarded? Trying to commit suicide? I highly doubt that, you could be slowing killing him though. Do you have him in at least a 10 gallon tank with a filter? Is the tank cycled? Usually when a fish floats it has a problem with its swim bladder. Try fasting for a day or 2 then feed him a deshelled thawed out frozen pea and see if that helps. If you are feeding him a floating food then switch to sinking, it is better for goldfish and I don't know why they still sell floating foods.

Goldfish are retarded and greedy and dirty but they look good. You might check how much oxygen is getting to your fish if he is in a bowl you need to change the water pretty often to keep the oxygen level up. Be better in a tank with aeration and a filter for wastes.

The gold fish swims to the top because this is how they get their oxygen. It can also mean they want some food. They are pretty greedy. Hope that helps. More information here also http://petcaretips.net/goldfish-behavior.html

Maybe he's not getting enought oxygen out of the tank? Get an air pump with an air stone. If thats not it maybe he needs a bigger place? Gold fish can easily grow to 12" and need a large home to grow up in!

Maybe he IS retarded?

Well maybe hes bored. Try getting some pretty colored rocks and maybe an interesting plant. Dose'nt seem like much, but its more than enough simualtion for a fish.

A goldfish has a short memory span, "3 seconds". Sounds like your goldfish may have some bad h2o.

Okay, I had a beta fish that did this exact same thing. He would float belly up and then when I thought he was dead and picked up his bowl to flush him he swam around like normal again. I think fish in general do this just to get a rise out of us.

No, not retarded, more likely desperate for oxygen. I would go discuss the details of your tank. including the types of fish you have, any plants, the type of stone used, and filters and such ASAP.

Do you have some plants in the tank?
Do you have an aerator?

Sounds like the fish needs oxygen.

First thing I'd do is check your water parameters-ammonia should be 0 ppm, nitrites 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm
