This is a career I am considering right now. What degrees did you get? What was helpful for you to learn? Any really good schools for this area? Also, do you need more than a masters degree to do this? If you are a counselor or know or anyone and what they did to become a counselor; any imput would be great. Thanks!

Hello
I currently work as a family therapist and do some marriage counseling as well. I have a master's degree in clinical psychology and I am currently finishing up a doctorate in clinical psychology. In terms of schools, there are many good master's and doctoral level programs in clincial and counseling psychology that will prepare you for marriage counseling.

There are some good websites to check out regarding this topic

you can definitely become a marriage counselor/therapist with a master's but it is important to check your state requirements because licensing can vary from state to state

master's degrees
MA counseling or clinical psychology
MSW masters in social work
MFT masters family therapy
LPC licensed professional counselor (master's level)

doctoral degrees
PhD
PsyD
EdD

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Basically you need a degree in pyschology specializing in inter personal relationships. Any of the big Universities can help you. You dont really need a Masters either. I have a BS in Social-Pyschology coupled with a Paralegal Certificate mixed with many yrs experience as a Federal Officer dealing with people from all over the world has given me an insight into relationships and people that no school can teach you. You can start by volunteering at your local church in counseling teens or marital couples to see if youre cut out to do this. If youre the kind of person that tends to get emotionally involved then this isnt for you as this will eat you alive if you let it and sometimes even I still have trouble dealing with some of these. But if you love working with people and love solving problems then this is a good career choice. Pyschology isnt easy to major in but its worth the effort, but just remember to gear it towards inner relationships, I wish you the best of luck in your choice. By the way social-pyschology is actually in laymans terms; street science as pertaining to law enforcement
