They are eggs.
If you want to get rid of ants, then put down some Nutrasweet, or other artificial sweetener. They will carry it back to their nest, where they will all eat it, and die. Aspartame, the active ingredient in artificial sweeteners was originally developed as an ant exterminator. Don't use it yourself - it's very poisonous.

I've observed them over the years and done my research. Kill the first one you see. They only lay down a track if they return to the nest with food. Certain ones are sent out as scouts to find a source, then all the rest follow, so kill those scouts before they get back to the nest. I don't know of any way to totally eradicate ants, but you can lay down boric acid with some bait around the perimeter of the foundation of your house. Best done by a professional. I'm a little confused that you are sitting in a recliner eating a box of caramel corn and they came in the house, but then say you've heard they can come in the the house as well. They're already in your house. They're not nice. Don't worry. You won't wipe out the entire ant population of the world by protecting your home.

They are not eggs!!! They are not larvae!!! They are the pupa stage of the ant.
Like a butterfly lays an egg. The caterpillar (larva) comes out of the egg. The caterpillar turns into a cocoon (pupa). And the new butterfly comes from the cocoon. Those "rice" looking things are the pupa--the equivalent to a cocoon in a butterfly.
