I don't know how true this is but apparently Stephen Hillenburg the creator of spongebob...created him as an adult cartoon with a number of sexual references for himself and some friends.
the myth goes that someone told him spongebob could be a cute marketable character.
he dropped the adult themes(not all of them there still are some undertones)and pitched it to nickelodeon who bought it.
Hillenburg by the way is also the creator of Rockos Modern Life.
