Depends where you swim.....I was on the west coast at Barra de Navidid and I almost drowned 'cause I could not swim back to the beach because of the under toe that was pulling me back to sea....Very dangerous....

In general, yes... same as anywhere else, you need to make sure there's no sewage being drained into the water near the beach (look for a pipe running down to the water-- it's too often a problem in the US as well, particularly with storm drains after a heavy rain), and be careful in unfamiliar waters about currents and undertows. Also, many Mexican beaches don't have lifeguards (also true in the US!), so you're swimming at your own risk.
