We used mineral wool in the mills of Northern Minnesota many years ago, they still do, to make ceiling tile. It's made from blowing a type of sand into a heated steam and it forms fibers similar to perlite. They're mostly used for bulk, for a fill. The type your speaking about is used for insulation. A blowing fiber. At one time this was used for insulation for refers and other cooling agents.
