It gives more support for the ankle which is important as you don't want to sprain your ankle which I once did because I did not lace my skates properly

If you are going to be doing any jumps or spins I would suggest that you NOT tie them around your ankles! Get someone at the rink who knows how to lace skates to show you. There are ways that skaters tie and tuck the laces. I was a skater for years and years and it's easier to show than to describe!

It depends on the kind of person you are, but I dont know how anyone could skate with out haveing support on your ankles that seems very hard to do, I like my skates tight and all the way up but other people like them loser and not go all the way up to the top hook.

For hockey I always tie around the ankles so that I have greater stability. It's preference though

No, just dont tie then to tight. Though I recomend trying the extra lace around your boot, not your leg.
