First, "sounding" intelligent diminishes "being" intelligent. There is a difference. Do not waste time on having knowledge on every subject. Intelligent listening counts too. What does this conversation entail? And to whom are you impressing?
I think your quaestion has more to do with your level of comfortability in certain situations. The answer to that is simply just speaking more to people. This way your able to better articulate your already, intelligent thoughts.
Put down your pen!

First of all, get an education, if you haven't already, because without that you can have an IQ of 180 and still sound like a dope. Second, when you're involved in a conversation, especially with well educated people, Keep your mouth shut and speak when spoken to. Don't shoot your kisser off about stuff you only know a little about. And finally, work on your vocabulary.

There is also the distinction between intelligent and wise. Intelligence usually refers to your ability (such as IQ score, SAT test ect) Wisdom is defined by knowing what you know and knowing what you do not know. By admiting that you do not have extensive knowledge of a certain topic but that you are willing (able) to learn. Shows that you have both wisdom and intelligence. So unless you are defending a thesis or something, don't be afraid to express your current limitations (just express them in a way that shows you are not bound by them).

Listen to what other people say and respond to their ideas. People will be amazed by your intelligence, simply because most people don't listen to anything but the blabber in their own heads. DON'T try cheap tricks like using big words: this is the easiest way to make a fool of yourself.

I have a tendency to use larger words, which leads others to think I am more intelligent than I really am. I have fun with it, because I love to find new big words to slip into a conversation.

Sometimes it's not a mater of sounding intelligent, it's more not sounding self important. I don't evaluate people I talk to as dumb and smart, it's more are they interesting and interested. Sincerety makes my day too, and being passionate about what you're talking about works too.

If you're 'intelligent' it should show, despite all your efforts. Try using complicated vocabulary words, and give minute details about what you're talking about.

Don't say things like "aint" or "gonna" or "twenny".
Enunciate properly, no "dese & dose" or dropped end letters.
