I just had a goldfish die today after months of trying to save it. It was in a tank with only one other fish. It sounds silly, but how long does this fish need to "grieve" before replacing the one that died? Both fish were ryukins, and are my first ones. I bought them together. Also, how would I introduce a new fish? Should I get another ryukin or does it matter? The fish died of some kind of gill disease that antiparasitics, antibiotics, and pretty much every other fish medicine out there couldn't cure. The other fish has never been sick.

There have been many studies that have disproved that myth about the 3 second memory, so if you don't have a clue about something then don't try to give advice.

Anyway, before you get a new fish you should find out what the gill disease was. If it was something that isn't contagious then you should be fine getting another fish. Just because the fish you still have never had a problem doesn't mean that whatever caused it in your other fish isn't still in the water, it could just have a stronger immune system to fight it off. When you do get a new fish you should always quarantine it for at least a month to make sure it doesn't introduce something into the tank. Things like ich are easy to spot but not all things are that is why it needs to be quarantined so long.

I hear fish don't have long memories... But you hear a lot of things... Ok, I'd start off by doing a partial water change and give it a couple days to settle. The add and new fish breed doesn't matter, as long as the fish ar compatible. Rember goldfish can get big fast (mine are alreay 4" and I only had then for a couple months....)

R u kidding me! I feed my fish goldfish! Come on man!? Really goldfish? Antibiotics? All that $ and for what dead fish food! Get some real fish. Believe me it would be the best decission you ever made. Dont get me wrong....I love my fish. I really do. I recently had to move and had nowhere to put ny fish till I had a new spot. A so-called friend either sold, ate, or killed em. Now I had some bad *** fish. And Yes i cried till I kicked his door in and rescued 3 oot of the 8 fish I had.1 of the three was sick with a similar disease something to do with the skin. I put him in another tank with treatments such as stress coat etc.till he was stronger. This is life only the strong survive! Food Chain!. Now its been a few weeks with the others n hes on his last dayz. They have been well 1 in particular beating the crap outa him. But my point is watching all this watching how two of my fish have now packed up and some are actually fighting for the sick 1. It has been quite a beautiful thing. LIFE at its best! Try some more exciting fish of your desire instead of fish food and believe me you will be a different person.
