Not all fish needs are the same so do some research on the type of fish you want then do what you learned.

It really depends on the type of fish. Before you get a fish-- or any pet, really-- visit the library and check out some books about that critter.

Goldfish (khoi), tropical fish, and salt water fish are all different and have different requirements.

If you have never kept fish before (and it sounds as though you haven't) you should probably start out with goldfish. Goldfish are quite tough and relatively easy to care for.

If you have a cat, you might not want to get fish. Your cat will bother the fish day and night trying to catch them. I would like to keep some fish but I know it's just not possible with my cat-- she would never leave them alone.

I hope this was helpful!

I agree with a lot of the answers already given, but I'd say the #1 thing to do that will prevent most problems/dieseases, is doing regularly weekly water changes. Unless you're going with a betta in a small tank, they'd need to be more frequent, but the amount of water to change depends on the amount of fish/size of tank. I'd say on average 20% a week.

it really depends on the sort of fish you are going to have ...if it is a freshwater community talk ...then set the talk up ..add the water ...use your tap water ...and buy a water conditioner that is found in the fish supplies ...let the talk run with the filter going for 48 hours without the fish ...then add the fish ...make sure you feed them at least twice a day ...get an algae eater ...try live plant eventually ...because they will eat them sometimes ...and it oxygenates the water ...if the algae eater does it's job ...you shouldn't need to ever clean the tank ...make sure the water temp in in the proper zone ..according to the fish you buy ...good luck
