The man was a butcher and deserves to die. But, it burns me that the U.S. does not take responsibility for making him who he was. Back in 1983 Donald Rumsfield spoke the highest praise of him after visiting Baghdad. The city of Detroit actually gave him the keys to the city earlier that same year. We put him in power, and did not take responsibility for allowing him to go too far.
It also angers me that we have singled him out to pick on over the years. Syria's king Assad has been just as bad, if not worse, of a tyrant when it comes to human rights violations. Iran held us hostage under the Knomaneii regime, and we let it slide. North Korea is abusing human rights and violating nuclear regulations, yet we've never threatened to go in and take them out. Hussein was an easy playground bully for the U.S. to pick on to make us look noble. Personally, I think the main reason Bush went after him was because of the failed assassination attempt Saddam had made on his father, during his final week in office.
Hussein deserves to die. No doubt about that. But, the United States has refused to accept their role in making him the butcher he was, and has also been very choosy about "Ruthless thugs and brutal dictators" who they decide need to be removed from office. That is what pisses me about this whole situation.

The verdict seem entirely reasonable, although I'm not really in a position to judge - I wasn't present in court and didn't hear all the evidence.
The sentence, on the other hand, is foolish in the extreme. Hanging Saddam will create a martyr that insurgents will rally round.
Funny that you asked about the verdict, and all the bloodlust merchants want to answer about the sentence.

He knew the outcome before the trial started. He smiled at the press when the verdict was read. Sure, we kill Sadaam, but he damn well knows he's a martyr. When his neck snaps chaos will ensue. I'm not saying he's not deserving of the sentence, but things are about to get immeasurably worse.

Well saddam and his outfits murdered 200,000 iraqi's so he should hang.
George Bush and his outfits murdered and tortured 600,000 iraqi's and nobody has the guts to indict the man for crime against humanity. what kind of world do we live in when america can take Iraqi lives with impunity and we all Britain and the rest of the civilised world (except Germany looks on with approval?

Justice was delivered for the hundreds of THOUSANDS of ethnics in Iraq that Hussein simply signed over to death. I don't feel that hanging is the right punishment - he won't suffer nearly enough in my opinion.

If you live by the sword, you die by it. Saddam was sentenced to death for only ONE charge remember. He could get dozens of death sentences for all the rotten things he did to Iraq and it's people.

long overdue, and nothing that happens to him can bring back the people he killed so if this gives the surviving relatives some peace of mind then all the better
