How much money is owed to you? If it's a relatively small amount, $5000 or less, you can go to small claims court without a lawyer.
All you do is find out where the courthouse is in your area. (The post office or police station could tell you where to go.) Tell them who you're suing and for how much, pay the $50 or so court costs, and serve the person you're suing.
It's a simple process, so that's what I'd recommend if it's a small amount of money.

Lawyers generally specialize in certain types of cases -- criminal defense, civil contract, malpractice, personal injury, real estate, etc.
If the issue is money loaned to someone under contract, than you are looking at contracts and collections issues. If the money was stolen, then you are looking at civil tort law.
Start with attorneys who advertise for civil and contract matters, and give them the details. An attorney is ethically bound (though many do not) to only take cases they are capable of handling.
