i have had both hamsters and gerbils. they seem to do better if there are 1 in each cage. we had 2(same sex) in 1 cage once. they fought pretty bad. one day we woke up and 1 was dead. it wasn't too long after that the other died of lonliness. so if you have one at a time it's better

Gerbils are very social animals and deserve to live in pairs. But beware of having more than 3 females together because there is a chance of them breaking apart and having territorial fights. Males generally get along better in larger groupings.

You don't HAVE to but some people think it is better to have two gerbils because maybe they once had one gerbil and it died. Then they got two gerbils and they lived longer.

I had 2 female grebils that I rescued from the SPCA (there time was up...) and they spent hour grooming each other and sleeping together. When one died the other seemed to miss her for a few months and then was ok. They are social animals and do like the intraction. But they can also live happy alone.
