they have something like msn chat called 'myspace chat' i think, its always advertised on it so you'll defo see it... but the other person has to download it.
you can also send e-mails or comment on there webpage if its just something small...
my space is great for music.... loads of unusual and unsigned music.. although its full of pretension idiots :) and LOADS of Americans adding you as friends because they've nothing better to do hahaa...

MySpace originally was for non-mainsteam bands to make a page so people can hear their music. But now it's loaded with all sorts of people which is cool cuz I found a long lost friend on there. You can't "chat" but you can add people and send messages and post comments.

Yes you can but the client is rather poor. I would set up and account on one of the major clients, such as msn, yahoo, or aol and use Meebo which is a web based multi-client instant messaging client. You can get in contact through email and get someones IM name and talk to them through a better interface.
