Did you know that up until 1959, it was illegal NOT to celebrate the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot in the UK?
The fact that a treasonous plot against the King (James I) had been uncovered was important in the 17th century, and it's one of those traditions that has just stuck. Here in NZ, we're seriously considering banning the sale of fireworks to private citizens because of the increasing mayhem - the Fire Service delivered yet another ultimatum this year, and those causing the havoc were deaf to it (again). I've nothing against sensible people letting off fireworks on the 5th (or nearest non-school-night), but the clowns who spend months (and $1000s) letting them off day and night should be hanged, drawn and quartered, just like Fawkes & co.!

PS There is no logic to it - some things get remembered, some don't. Who in the UK remembers the disaster at Gallipoli? It's far bigger here than Armistice Day (Remembrance Sun/day, Nov 11), yet Britain lost far more men than the Australia New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).
The irony about Guy Fawkes is that James I's son, Charles I was executed by the people!
