We're buying a house very soon, and although the carpets should be replaced we dont want to spend that much on a new carpet right now. (carpets are in good condition just have stains and path marks) What I want to know is should we spend the money to have a professional service come in, should we rent a unit from a local company (u-haul has a carpet cleaner rental for $20 a day does anyone have any positive/negitive feedback on going that way) Or should we buy a Hoover SteamVac (they rated the highest in consumer reviews) or another home use model. We have at least 600 square feet to clean and are on a budget, and have two toddlers running around spilling all the time...

great question... I would have the professionals come and do it before you move in seeing as to how you said you have toddlers, you really don't know whats in the carpet and don't want them playing in it, then if you can afford it buy the hoover steam vac,, i have had one for 6 years now and use it all the time they are great for kiddy messes ( HAVE 3 GRANDCHILDREN AND A DOG) as far the rent your own ,,, they just move the dirt from one area to the next and don;t really extract the water enough which isn't good for the carpet or floors under,, Stanley steamer has great specials for cleaning as do many other companies

If you hire the rug doctor, be prepared for hard work! If you don't mind that, and have a full afternoon to spare, then go ahead. You can also hire carpet stretchers like the professionals used. Make sure you have some tacks and a hammer as well to nail it back down to the thin board which runs all around the perimeter of the room. Again it is not easy work, and you'll probably get back ache, but can be cheaper in the long run than a whole new carpet. If it is as yuk as you say, it'll probably need doing over a few weekends to get it to at least just normal dirty looking rather than disgusting dirty looking! So if you are prepared for hard work, go for it!

Professional, no question. (Just make sure it is a true professional, not just some hack.) Do some research, dont just hire the cheapest cleaner you can find. "You get what you pay for" is very often true. Get referrals from your friends, neighbors, etc.

A few hundred dollar machine (Bissell, Hoover or Rug Doctor or other) can NOT do the job a 10 or 20 thousand dollar (or more) truckmounted carpet cleaning machine can. The machines sold (or rented) to consumers are for emergency spot removal and routine maintenance BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL CLEANINGS.

Cheap carpet cleaning is not good. Good carpet cleaning is not cheap.

Lily...When I first read your question, before I opened it, I had a number of questions...Now that I have read your preamble...
Hears a few suggestions...

Since you have a new house and there is no furniture in there yet...You could do it any of the ways you suggested...Consider...

It's a lot of work doing it yourself with a rented unit..Not only picking it up, lugging it home and throughout the house etc...They are not the best machines anyways and badly soiled spots are hard to remove..Whether you buy one or rent one..The cleaners/spotters will drive your budget up..They're not cheap..

The reservoir's for the dirty water in the extractor part of the units are very limited and you are constantly stopping and emptying then..Very labour intensive..

As to the purchasing of one...By the time you buy the unit...cleaners etc...You could have it professionally done and with a lot less hassle...Besides, you will probable not use it enough in the future to justify the expense...

Contact a few cleaning companies like Rug Dr. etc and get some quotes..They will do it properly, quickly and thoroughly, with a guarantee....

Price out the other alternatives and compare, consider your labour etc and make your decision then...Good luck..Yukoneze

I asked for and received a carpet shampooer for Christmas, but it broke while using it the fist time, so as much as I would like to recommend buying one...I'm sorry to say my experience hasn't been all the great! LOL! If you can afford it, go for new carpeting or have it professionally cleaned and re-stretched. If your married and your husband is willing, you can also rent a carpet stretcher and do that part of it yourself. It's not hard to do, but it can be hard on your knees. You'll also need a carpet knife to trim the excess carpet, other than that, you should be good to go! Good luck!

Check with the local carpet cleaning companies or handymans, and get a free estimate. I would charge less than $70 to do 600square feet. Then once it is proffessionally done once just stay on top of the spills. I would suggest a professional cleaning once a year, more if you have cats or dogs.

A good stain remover is windex, mixed 50/50 with water.

You can rent a cleaner for ordinary cleaning. You can choose how many passes and how throrough you want the job to be. I was renting an apartment for 2 years. Rented a cleaner and the carpet looked better than it did when I first moved in. $20 for cleaner. Another $20 for cleaner and you can do your house a few times to your satisfaction.

i suggest you do a combo, have it proffesionally cleaned, because you do not know whats in there, then buy a unit yourself for when your kids spill stuff. they have one that u put over a stain, turn it on, and it does the rest! yeah so you wanna do it proffesionally, some old carpets have really nasy deseases, they'll do a hundred time better job than you can, and they could probably get rid of those paths you dont like.

i would buy your own. if you have toddlers and theres an emergency, then dont take chances of your carpet being ruined, its not a big investment. it would cost more for what toddlers do.
