Until recently (and perhaps still) the Vatican City State had the death penalty (by firing squad).
The Magisterium is not anti-death-penalty per se, but recent thought makes its imposition in most instances inappropriate.
Basically, the death penalty is suitable only when society needs to defend itself against dangerous people; modern penalogy makes life imprisonment a better option.

As a pro-life Catholic, I would say it's split on this issue in my Ohio area. I am for the life of the unborn, but hesitate when it comes to high rank criminals. If it came down to the murder of a family member, I may want them dead, but am hoping I will forgive as the Amish did. I really can't say unless faced with this difficult challenge. Hope I'm not.

As a church they are against the death penalty, as people, each have thier own opinions and it varies,
Most likley in the US more pople are for it, than against it, ( but that is more my guess than facts I can prove

UK: As a Catholic I would like to see the return of capital punishment here for any serious sexual offense or murder of a child under the age of 11. I would have no problem with my conscience whatsoever............

The Bible tells us that the giving and taking of life is up to God not man. So Catholics are against capitol punishment and abortion because God is against it.
