Forty-odd years ago it was okay for undergraduates to do experiments with radioactive sources. The laboratory had lots and lots of lead bricks, for the students to build a wall to shield their bodies from these radiation sources during the experiment. The commonest accident was dropping a lead brick on your foot.

Only defective microwaves will explode. The case of it doing so is extremely rare. I suggest you write about something do with Bunsen burners. They produce a very hot blue flame and can easily set things on fire. If those things are combustible, they will ignite or explode.

I work at a physics lab in the college I attend. I read that the moment you open the cap of a bottle containing cyclooctatetraene, it will form peroxides (white crystals). If you drop these crystals, I read that they can explode. I am being careful after I read the MSDS.

I had one very large explosion in a chemistry lab I was working in due to bad permanganic acid. I was blown off my feet and over and through some glassware. Luckily I did not catch fire and I went under the emergency shower to remove the acid.
It was not fun believe me.
