The most common answer I've heard from people who don't have a form of ID is that it's just the "government's way to keep track of you." To be quite honest, that's a pretty lame excuse to me. You don't need to have an ID to be able to be found and kept track of. I understand the need for an ID when voting, or for anything rather. It protects your identity and doesn't allow others to do things in your name. When showing an ID before voting, it ensures the people there that no one else is using your name to cast a ballot (i.e., people who want to vote more than once or people who aren't registered at all).
IDs are pretty necessary to do much of anything lately...open bank accounts, fly somewhere, even accepting new job positions in a lot of cases. Most think of "Drivers License" when they hear ID, but you can have a state ID as well, which don't require tests or anything. With so much identity theft going on in the world today, it's better to have an ID than to go without.

If you are an adult in the USA you will have one of the following:
drivers license
state issued id card
SS card or brith certificate
to not have one of the above, as an adult that is legal to vote....then you must not be a true citizen as each item is basic in needing to open a bank account, to get a car, apartment, house, etc.
To not have ID when voting would allow anyone to come in an vote, allow some to vote more than once and off set the true election process.

Many, many of the poorest people in this country do not have any ID. They can't afford the fee for it. Some people say it's impossible because of all the things you need an ID for, but all of those things also require money. These people do not have credit, bank accounts, cars. It is quite possible to get by without an ID if all you do is pay cash for things.
Also, these laws aren't requiring just any sort of ID... it has to be a government issued ID.

Sorry I was distracted with the picture. What was the question?
It is just a formality to show that you are registered and because it has to be a state issued ID (for those without a license). More and more places are using electronic systems in combination with your driver's license, but because not everyone has a state ID, the voter's ID will be around for a little longer.

People who have a problem getting around...the elderly after they quit driving. Unless there is a national id card, it will make it hard for some to obtain these id's...in addition to them being able to get to the polls...especially in states that do not allow same day registration.
For most, it probably is not a big deal.

Presenting ID is to make sure the voting process is not being manipulated or tampered with. There is no argument that can circumvent that safety precaution.
