The breast pump you purchased most likely contains information about the usage of that particular pump. Most pumps are similar in their use, but each one has it's little quirks.

In general, after hooking up all the attachments, and making sure the bottle or collection container is appropriately placed, you place the funnel over your breast, with your nipple in the opening at the center of the funnel, and squeeze the small trigger device. This will create a suction that will express milk. Be patient, sometimes you will need to massage your breast and get milk expressing easily before you begin, or it may take 3-5 minutes of pumping before the milk actually lets down.

Good Luck!

Believe it or not I found I got more results from the manual pump then the electric. I used the Gerber manual pump. Cup your breast in the funnel..pull down with quick motions ( pumping) when you bring the pump "up" kinda of break the sucktion and re suction your breast again... this is quickly. done. it's hard to describe, but with practise you'll get the hang of it. then i used the platex nursing system to store and freeze my breast mik. "Hope this helps"

Read the directions on the pump that you bought. You may need to boil it first or steralize it in the microwave or dishwasher. See what your specific instructions say and make sure it is assembled properly. Then center your nipple in the middle of the horn and begin pumping. Sometimes it helps to hand express a few drops of milk into the horn and spread that around so you can get a better seal.

Do you not have instructions with it? Go to the website of the brand you have and see if the instructions are there.

If not, you just put it together (make sure all of the bits are correctly assembled) cover your areola with it and squeeze the handle repeatedly. It might take a while at first, but the milk will flow.

Somethings that I found that helped me were to express from one side whilst my daughter was feeding from the other, and also expressing first thing in the morning was beneficial.

put it on your breast and start pumping, but when first starting off make sure its on minimum pressure instead of max.
