clean a tape?

What can I do to make a tape play better? Old stuff I can understand but this is newer. Not that new, 2002. I finally found confessions of an ugly stepsister. What can I do? Clean, and how? Would it work?

You can clean your tape deck. Either buy a cleaner or use a q-tip and alcohol, carefully wipe the inside elements, where the tape runs through. I usually run the player and hold the wet qtip to the rollers, and the wipe the other parts. Do this until there is no more brown residue coming off when you wipe. May take a while.

I still have many tapes from the 80s that are original and have lots of dust in them, so have to do this fairly often.
