Its her innosense that manifests itself
because of the evil done to her by her
father...
Its loosely based on the "Bell witch" legend
and the Bell family in Adams,Tennessee

The Spirit is a manisfistation of Betsy's hoarbering the guilt and fear of what her father is doing to here.
And to answer your second question: Yes, that is why they are being haunted. Silly huh?
