Yes, adolescents have not yet established thier own identity, values, and self worth. Many factors contribute to this. Such as: home life, the manner in which they were raised, searching for what makes them, "them", relationships, peer pressure, aspirations, as well as attacks on one another to establish ones own identity because they have not yet learned the proper manners to do so. (self esteem building, communication, problem solvling ect)
The adolescent ego is very fragile as it is not yet fully developed and very impressionable. Making self esteem issues very common in high school aged children.
Many people struggle with this issue all of thier lives though. But I think the adolescent portion of their lives is somewhat the most difficult period, in regards to self esteem.

Yes! High School is one of the hardest times in a adolecsents life. Kids can be very cruel and intimidating. You just have to be better than them and focus on your studies. Your grades are what makes you better in life. You may not believe it now but when your older you will see why all theses things matter.

Of course it is common. Their bodies are going through major changes and hormone levels are surging. Everything they attempt is on some level new to them and self esteem is sure to be a daily issue.
