So children can spend more time with their parents. If you get home from work at 5:30 you have to make dinner and get your children in bed by 7:30. Some homework is OK but when my second grader gets about 1 hour of homework it does not leave time for much else. Children should not have to choose between time to play outside and doing homework. When children are older they might have to work.

As a parent, this was a constant battle for me.
When I was growing up, we had no homework until middle school, and then very little until high school. And I, for one, got an excellent education.
If the teacher can't teach a child what s/he needs to know in the six to seven hours at school when the child is fresh, how is the child supposed to learn it later when s/he is tired?
I wanted to do enriching activities with my daughter, but there was very little time after school because of the hours of homework!
When children come home with hours of homework, parents are tempted to do the homework for them. I know I was. So I ended up cheating with my daughter instead of taking her to karate or music class or choir or nature walks.
Some teachers assign reading and questions for work at home, and use class time to correct the questions. There is little or no time spent actually teaching the material.
Some parents do not speak English or have little education, and yet the teachers (who went to college for it) are expecting these parents to teach their children at home, after school.
Schools are taking away recess and even PE from children, meanwhile complaining about kids who can't sit still in class. Don't they think children need exercise?
And it is also true that children need free time just to be themselves. They shouldn't have to spend all day and all evening too on schoolwork.

There is no reason. Wait until you get to college and have to write a 12 page paper in 2 days with research! Also, kids are far undereducated nowadays. Many can't even pass a simple exit exam. Do you really want to be at a dinner party in your 40's and have no clue about events and causations and can't even hold a conversation? You'll be the dumb***. Try to get something out of that homework even though you don't like it, it will be over soon enough.

Because we have to sit on our *** for six hours, sometimes more, doing absolutely nothing but listening to the teacher and doing work and reading stupid things. And then, guess what? We get to go home, sit on our ***, and do three hours of MORE work!!
Honestly, it's affecting myself physically. If I had less homework, then I would have time to work out every day. But I don't because I always have homework and I'm too tired.
Those are my perfectly good and honest reasons.

I don't think they should. It is a students job to go to school and work to learn what is needed. I remember in HS I never thought I'd ever use Geometry--but now, I'm glad I learned it and did my homework because it really is in preparation for later in life.
I feel homework is a part of a student's job. Really it's not that hard if you learn and understand the lesson in class and/or got help afterward. Practice makes perfect! Just be glad all you have to do is complain about homework--I'm sure the children working in sweatshops wish their only worry was homework.

Because they have been sitting in class for about 7 hours, and have learned enough for that day! Don't pressure them with homework every single day of their lives! Give them a break! Especially Middle and High schoolers. Yes, you are trying to get them prepared for life, but come on, that much homework is just not needed!

Many teachers have stopped giving homework because they hate the fights to get the kids to do it.
