Think of an echo. It is in the air, right? Not on the floor. Therefore the echo of a person, or ghost, floats through the air and does not fall. An echo ceases to be heard, a ghost ceases to be seen. It's an analogy that you can use to understand.

Cause Their Dancing on the Ceiling.

Seriously though the so called ghosts follow the paths they treaded in their real life. There was a case of a labourer seeing Roman Legionnaire ghosts in York, England who appeared to walk through the middle of the ground in the basement of a building. The place was being renovated and the ground was being excavated and it was discovered later than underneath the ground where the ghosts feet would have been was an old Roman Road.

Hi Celeste,
I will try my hand at explaining this phenomenon...

I believe you have a few choices here...

One is that if ghosts exist, they do float or drift above the ground level...

Two is that if ghosts exist, they float above floors because generally speaking, floors and bases built for homes, are made of a different material like cement or rock or bricks or even empacked dirt to form barriers too tough to penetrate so as to hold lots of weight like when we walk on them and they hold all our furniture and homes...
The floors may be too dense to allow a ghost to float through them, because of their texture and thickness...
Walls and doors are all made of plaster, wood, and paint and thin materials that is easy to penetrate...

Three is, there are no ghosts in reality because if there were, why wouldn't we all see them all the time???
I think if ghosts do exist they are on a different level from where we are...
They are not even in what we call presant day time...
They are on a level of space and time that we humans cannot penetrate while alive...
