I am a 34 year old Australian female living in Scotland and I have that restless feeling. I have £1500 in savings and no commitments. I have been living in Edinburgh for a year and a half now, and although beautiful and dripping in history and beauty, I'm over the weather, bored with my office job, and in need of a life changing experience. I don't want one or two weeks. I want a substantial experience.

I would like to think I am completely independent but I must admit that at the end of the day I am a tad "girly" in that I'm not sure I could navigate the Amazon on my own, so keep that in mind when you answer. And obviously I don't have a money tree to pluck from at my leisure...

With that being said, I am not averse to adventure and would be willing to push my comfort boundaries somewhat. I am very open minded, willing to immerse myself in a new culture and would like to feel as though I have made my mark on the world.

Check out the VSO (see http://www.vso.org.uk/ -- no I don't work for them!). You can get a chance to change the world a bit and travel, experience a new culture.
Alternatively, dive deeper into the culture where you are, or back in Australia. All around you every day are people living lives so very different from your own. Someone near you needs help, someone near you might be that person who can help you!
Here's an idea: Early tomorrow morning the Home Office may be trying to grab an asylum seeker for deportation. There are groups in Edinburgh who block these actions and get people to safety. You have the freedom to travel and live where you like as an accident of birth, pass it on (and meet some fascinating people while you do).
Here's another: in a primary school near you there's a kid who has trouble learning to read. Do a deal with your boss to volunteer as a reading helping twice a week. See http://www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk/opportunities/default.asp for more info...

I am planning a trip next summer from the UK fly to Moscow and then travel across Russia by trains to Vladivostok. This tip will take at least a month as I plan to stop off at many towns and villages along the way.
You could do a similar trip. Or indeed come with me on mine as it is safer to travel with a friend (note this is a genuine offer not a strange way to chat up strangers on-line) . I am sure it will be a great adventure and a unique experience. Also it's 100% girly friendly and guaranteed to open your eyes to new cultures.

There was a problem with the system and I could not get the reply to your message to send so here it is added to my original post:
Basically my mate Rupert did it a few years back and I am getting details from him soon as to costs and other details. He has been in Kenya for a month but will be back soon.
I have got one friend who are up for the trip but ideally we need at least one more person for the sake of safety and not sending each other mad with back and forth one on one conversation for the whole trip.
The estimate we have pieced together is around £700- £1200, but we will get more of an exact figure after talking to Rupert.
The trip must be done in summer/ autumn to avoid the Russian winter which gets exceedingly cold (as you can imagine!).

Anyway I will tell you a bit about myself. I am called Keiran, I am 26 and live in Yorkshire. I currenytly am working in a removal business as I needed to get a job quickly after spending a month in Australia sight seeing wiped out my savings. I have a Yahoo 360 page you can feel free to look at for pics of me and the trip. I have my blog on there too (beware reading back past a week ago as I did a crazy art project last week and the details are a bit *ahem* personal).

Anyway I will have more details on the Russia expedition regarding costs, times etc within a week from now. If you are really interested I will send you full details as soon as I get them in.

I am not sure how my friend who is going on the trip feels as to me telling people about them online so I will have to phone them before I will tell you about them.

Have fun!
- Keiran

left. always go left at crossroads :)

hmmm

perhaps you just need to move cities and jobs? clearly what youre doing isnt that fun, or you wouldnt have these problems. what about maybe taking a gap year and going to work for a charity? there are so many charities and organisations that fund you to go away and work overseas.

or maybe you could get a job transfer?

good luck!
