Smoke and fog

SMOG is a word coined in Victorian times when coal was being burned in every home and the addition of fog did not allow the smoke to go to atmosphere. Instead it made a dense blanket of pollution that hung around street level and was responsible for much lung related deaths and illness.
SMoke + Fog = SMOG

SMOG is a mixture of Smoke and Fog.

Back in the 1950s, there were lots of factories in the big cities, and most of these factories had huge chimneys which pumped smoke from the burning that the factories were doing into the Atmosphere. These chimneys produced, amongst other things CO (Carbon Monoxide), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), Sulphur (S2), Hydrogen, and ammonia (NH4).

When these chemichals got into the atmosphere, they reacted to affect the normal weather and produced dangers.

When naturally occuring Fog is mixed with Smoke, you get SMOG. When Sulpher mixes with Water in rain, you get Acid Rain.

I could go on, but I have answered your question.

Smog is a mixture of air borne pollutants (i.e. car exhaust, smoke, factory emissions) and fog, caused when there is high humidity and pollutants are able to accumulate near their source. It settles low over cities and is most common in coastal cities or cities surrounded by mountains. When coal was the main source of power in London, it would result in deadly "pea-soup" fogs.
