The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy.
The late Douglas Adams. He wrote the 5 part trilogy, it became a cult classic, then a TV series was aired on the BBC where it solidified his following. While he was in the process of making the movie, he passed away. Bits of movie trivia for you...
1 The "Nose railing" is a model of Mr. Adams nose.
2 When the aliens make the announcement, the lady sitting at the cafe reading the paper, is a relative of Douglas Adams, (I think his mom, but don't quote me on that part).
3 When they are in the lineup, to get Tril back, there is a robot... That is the original, from the BBC series.
4 At the end when they use the Abnormality Drive, the face that pops up at the end is Douglas Adams.

P.S. You need to read the books, they are one of my next reading projects, (I am a second generation fan of his)

The answer comes from DEEP THOUGHT, the biggest, most powerful computer ever devised in the entire galaxy.
It was designed to compute the answer to the question of " what is the meaning of life, the universe and everything"?
After many millenia in deep cogitation, he pronounced that the answer was 42, much to the consternation of the 20 oddish generation of computer minders.
These minders then commisioned the building of an even bigger computer to ask the correct question to get the right answer, this computer being called - Earth.

I have never read the book many speak of but the first thing that appears obvious to me is 24 hours to the day, 42 is the 24's opposite. Maybe the 42 does represent the meaning of life because it has relevance to the hours in a day-

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams - a friend of Pink Floyds Dave Gilmour.
One of the funniest series of books ever written (the film was a tragic misscariage of justice as it was incredibly awful and not funny at all).
Read it.
Brilliant.

The meaning of life is "Math."
M = 13th letter in the alphabet
A = 1st letter in the alphabet
T = 20th letter in the alphabet
H = 8th letter in the alphabet
13 + 1 + 20 + 8 = 42
