Actually there is a field of study known as historical climatology. The first site below is a site focusing on the history of Maine climate. The second site is global, and has information as early as 1697. There is even an International Journal of Climatology (third site)
It would help to know what part of North America in which you are interested. Hopefully these sites will get you started. I have heard that the Little Ice Age was from 1560 to 1850. In general, during that time there was a general cooling off, increased glaciers, snow etc. In some areas there were droughts, in other areas flooding. In 1625 Henry Hudson was pushing people to come settle in the New York area for its temperate climate. However, the winters drove many people to move south. Good luck.
