As a mother of two hopefully I can help answer that question! The first time you try using a pump the sensation could best be described as "strange" but not painful. Using a breast pump feels like attaching a large wet vacuum cleaner to your chest. Sounds painful, but it really isn't. The sensation is so strange that it actually causes your uterus to contract and to shrink more quickly. But, the first few times that you use it it will definitely be uncomfortable as you will feel those sensations in your uterus. But, expressing breast milk is beneficial for both you and your baby. So, please give it a try! But, please don't exceed the recommended time for a pumping session. Because the only time that I found it to be painful is when I was empty. And I found that an electric double breast pump was more efficient and more comfortable than a manual pump. Good luck!

Congratulations on the arrival of your beautiful little angel!!! Your milk comes in on day 3. I had the same problem. My nipples aren't cut out to breast feed. I had terrible sore nipples with both kids, so i went to the bottle. Even pumping was sore. Anyway, i kept it up because, like you, i wanted my kids to have the best start. 3 oz is OK. How old is he/she Hun? You should be pumping every 3 hours on the dot or your milk will dry up. Make sure you are pumping enough to have a least 2 bottles ahead of a feed, if that makes sense. Your breast milk can be kept in the fridge for up to 48 hours, but then throw it out and keep it at the back top shelf of the fridge, not the front. The more you pump the more milk you will supply. But, some women have difficulties pumping milk, they can't get enough. Some babies get more out of the breast then the pump, meaning they get more of the milk out. Do you have a lactation consultant you can call on for help. In Australia they come to your house and help you with the info you need. Your baby should be drinking 90-120oz every 3-4 hours. But you should be pumping every 3 hours. My daughter was having 7 oz at 8 weeks every 3-4 hours. Hope this helped! X

Pumping feels different than nursing.....not quite as comfortable as having the baby on the breast, but it should still not be painful. If it is painful, the suction on the pump may be too high, the size of the horns might not be right, etc.

it can be uncomfortable, but it shoudn't hurt. If it does remove the pump and reposition it. Just like latching on it shouldn't hurt. Make sure that you start at the lowest setting then only turn iy up to how much you can handle. You are doing great keep up the good work for your baby.

It did for me the first couple of times. But now I'm used to it and it no longer hurts. If you're using an electronic breastpump, you can adjust the suction and the speed so you can make it more comfortable for you. Some women need a stronger pressure, some need a lighter pressure.

It was very uncomfortable for me at times, but I mad the mistake of pumping and letting my husband feed our daughter also. After having the bottle, she didn't want to breast feed anymore. Just be careful it you really want to breastfeed

i found that it didn't hurt so much but it was quite difficult to get as much as i thought i should be getting. just do it for as long as you feel comfortable and freeze it in little amounts. when you have enough for a feed defrost and put in a bottle. boots do great little storage bags for the freezer.
