"IF" that is the case .... and I don't know whether it is or not ... it oculd very well be attributed to the rate of depression, esp. untreated, in people in the Pacific Northwest.
Not only is the rate of suicide high, so is the rate of obesity!
Both are symptoms of depression, and obesity can also be a side effect of anti-depressants.
While those of us who grew up in the Pac NW will vehemently deny that the weather (lots of grey skies, and lack of sun in winter months) affect us, the reality is, it probably does. Seasonal Affective Disorder is very real.
I notice that Oregon seems to have a higher rate of both obesity and suicide than even WA ... possibly because there are more people who move there from other places, not sure.

I too am in an inbound customer service center and I would have to disagree..I have never really had much issue with anyone except for those in New York..They are very verbally abusive and extremely rude..Same thing with people from Los Angeles. I probably talk to about 100 people a day..I would say if I talked to 50 people from New York maybe 2 of them were pleasant..the rest were demanding and rude saying things like "Do you know who I am and who you are dealing with?" "You must call UPS right now and make them deliver my card NOW I will not wait any longer..." Everytime my phone beeps before I even pull the Customers information I can immediately tell where they are from. I have been told that because I live in the south I am stupid. They will not let me speak to assist them. I start a sentence and before I say 1 word they jump in and ask 80 questions.
The reputation they have is deserved....They are rude people. I always wanted to visit NY, but now I wont go there.

I think it might be hard to be objective about this question. However, I gotta say, I've never encountered so many rude people until I move to North Seattle. And not only rude but downright oblivious! These people will step on your toes in the grocery store, pull right out in front of you on the road, most these people ride your your *** until you slam on the breaks, and really they treat each other like they are at a campsite. Most of everyone here is from another state or country and the respect level, and understanding of who your neighbor is what your community is about, what the local identity might be, is totally absent. People are totally disconnected. I don't blame it strictly on the seasonal affective disorder, the shitty weather, but on the fact that everyone is from a another place, and the population has grown so rapidly that none of these communities have grown organically. Above all, no one comes out to greet their neighbor. People are virtually socially retarded here. These towns surrounding Seattle have no true infrastructure, no downtown or old town area where people converge. They are cookie cutter towns where everything north or south of Seattle looks the same!
And the routes! People in Western Washington take the same routes all the time! Your find-if you have been born in raised in a place like SoCal like I have, that there's very few frickin places to go! Eventually you begin to understand that no understanding of neighbor, nowhere to go, shitty weather, and population overgrowth, can lead to the feeling of depression. Then you wonder: Jeez why are all these people so rude!?

You'd be cranky too if your candidate in 2000 had a presidential election stolen from him, Pennsylvania stole a superbowl from you last year and no one else in the nation can make a decent cup of coffee.

Good question. We also have the highest rate of suicide in the country. Not sure why, I think it is one of the best places to live in the US.
