How does someone (who's qualified in another country) become a licenced Gas Fitter,(and/or plumber) in America

Im a qualified Brithish plumber, and a quaified and licenced Brithish Gas Fitter. My wife is American and we're considering moving there (probably Chicago). So I'm wondering how or would I be able to get licences, also is it normal in America for someone to do plumbing and Gas Fitting. Is heating and cooling a seperate trade, or is it just the duct work a seperate trade (as in Europe).

I work for a plumbing construction co. You can apply as an apprentice and then take your state required boards to become certified.
