Unrelenting pain and misery is no gift.

People have the right to determine when life should end. After all, nobody denies that courage on the battlefield, or death while saving the lives of others, is worthy of merit in the eyes of man and of man's God. Death is a part of life and living. Nobody should be condemned to pain, dependency and misery. On the other hand, nobody but the person concerned has any right to decide.

And that is why every state in the USA and many jurisdictions abroad have legal provisions for living wills and health care proxies. Everybody should have one -- even if it is to say that "my life shall be preserved at all costs, so long as there is somebody, some insurance company or some government, prepared and willing to pay for my hospitalization and my doctors' bills.

What should happen in a country like the USA where health care and paying for it are private matters is beyond the scope of this Y! Answer. In Canada, and here in Europe at least, making a choice to live does not, in the absence of employer-paid private insurance, condemn one's family to poverty and bankruptcy

Each person may have been given the gift of life, but each life belongs to that person.

If that person does not choose to live, and that choice is being made rationally and with proper forethought, then the choice should be left up to the individual.

My understanding of God is one that supports free will as absolute. God doesn't want to force people to do what they do not choose to do. Neither should the government. Especially in a matter as personal as this.

Some people dont have a way out, God has nothing to do with it, there are hundreds who do it and have no belief in God what so ever, look at other cultures, its considered rewarding if you do it, Kama Kazis or the Islam religion, these people think when they die there will be hundreds of virgins catering to there every needs. For the most part, people get depressed and just think life is not worth living for, they have no one to talk to or no one that understands, there are kids with abusive families, all kind of reasons, when your that down and feel no one cares, there is no way out, or the only way out is to end their lives. Its sad, but to really help, we need to not just preach about God, but get down to the root of why they feel this way to begin with. Me personally, I love life and I do believe in God, that doesnt go to say that I have felt really depressed for, its how I dealt with it personally, and the support of ones that love me, is how I got through it, some people just cant cope or have no ones help. LOL

PS What do you think about mercy killing?

I think some people feel so locked down in darkness that they don't know how to pull themselves out.'

It's like living in Portland with lots of rain and darkness, so it's hard to imagine the sunshine in Phoenix.

And they don't know how to shake it off, aka: move somewhere better within their own minds.

I battle depression alot but it's because I get bogged down in my thoughts and it takes me awhile before I realize how deep and down I have gotten, once I realize it, then I can pull myself out of it.

Somepeople just can't realize it but it doesn't mean that they don't think life is a beautiful gift.

I would not consider myself suicidal, but I do NOT feel life is a gift. It is a curse, because once you are born, you MUST die.

A famous author once said something like "I curse my mother, for by giving birth to me she has consigned me to die."

Some sweet thinking pudding head once decided life is a gift. Perhaps it is, but not every gift is all good.
