Mercury actually does have an atmosphere but the planet's small size makes it hard to retain. It is not stable.

A thin but strong wind from the Sun blasts particles off of Mercury's hard surface, creating a thin atmosphere around the planet.

Not really, it's too small to be able to hold any real atmosphere although it does have a very thin gas envelope formed from particles captured from the sun
