My position went from clerk to manager of a store. I maintain that I have not received a pay raise since my gross has not changed ... management maintains that I have received a raise since my hourly went from $13.25 to $15.38 on a 50 hour week. Who is right? Both of us? How can we reconcile our different viewpoints?

depends on how many hrs of OT u were doing & at what rate OT was paid as a clerk. if u were doing @ least 10 hrs of OT per wk (or 50 hrs per wk like mgr) as hrly clerk @ time and a half for OT, u just took a pay cut by becoming salaried mgr. otherwise it almost looks like u may have broken even. if u want 2 reconcile the viewpoints, ask for comp time for anything over 45 hrs. u're not asking 4 more $, but xtra comp time can translate n2 cash if u figure time is money. just a thought.

Depends on the hours you worked before. If you are making the same money with less hours now, you win. If you were working 50 hrs or less before, all you did was inherit more responsibility. Also check the states laws. OT should kick in again after 50 hrs for a salary position if that applies to you. If you still have room to negotiate, I suggest lobbying for perks if you can't get the dollars. Sometimes its easier to get additional paid vacation than another dollar per hour for example. The only way to reconcile is to negotiate the package to a point everyone is happy with. FYI, don't suggest the minimum you'll agree to, leave room to compromise and still end up satisfied.

You have to remember that overtime is not part of your salary. Even if you work somewhere that always has overtime, it is really not factored in. When they advertise positions the almost always base the annual gross on a 40 hour week, anything else is gravy. You will now make $40k/year even if you don't work 50 hours a week. You no longer have to watch every minute coming and going, lunches & breaks, or 1/2 days for personal reasons.
