The pill can regulate your periods and help with cramps, but with any medication there are side effects and the side effects vary from person to person. Unfortunately, the only way you can find out is by speaking to your doctor and trying different types of medication. If you have any adverse reactions to the pill you can stop taking it; if u are not having sex and its just for your period. You can come off that pill, wait the recommended time and speak to your doctor about trying another type. One might work for you and give you the results you are looking for.
I am glad you are talking to your mum about it, thats a smart move!
Personally, I have heavy periods but no cramps or other problems. I just wear a tampon and pad on heavy days and change frequently. I don't like to take any medication if I can help it, but different things work for different people.
You should read up on the pill, get info from your doctor and talk to your doctor and your mum, sisters too if you have any.
I hope this helps :-)

Your mom is right. The pill will help regulate your periods. Talk to your doctor, there are one or two birth control pills that claim to be less likely to cause weight gain.

If you're losing enough blood to be anemic, either only a few days a month or chronically, the possible side effect of weight gain is probably a lot better for you than the loss of blood and iron.

Pros of going on the pill: regular, shorter, lighter periods, resulting in less blood loss and less potential for anemia; not getting knocked up

Cons of going on the pill: a chance of putting on some weight (which is not always a side effect)

You're right... no good stuff... all bad stuff.....

I used to have really heavy periods with extreme cramping, too. I'm on Yasmin now, and have been for almost 2 years, and I have barely one twitch of cramping for 5 minutes, nothing more, and my periods are super light and last for two days, but only during the day (I don't have my period at night on Yasmin, for some reason)..... I use 2-3 regular tampons for my period, that's it. I highly recommend it.

I didn't put on ANY weight with Yasmin.... I've actually lost 15 lbs since I went on Yasmin and haven't gained any of it back. I hope this helps! Yasmin rocks!

Ask your doctor about NuvaRing. It is a form of birth control that releases hormones and has minimal side effects. Check out their website www.nuvaring.com for more information. You might also want to get checked out for bleeding disorders. I have the same problem (though I've had 3 kids and I'm 36) but I've only just found out that I have Von Willebrands which is a bleeding disorder that can cause problems with menstrual cycles.

You really have to decide whick is easier to live with possible weight gain or heavier cycle.
