He's a team mate who can accurately run a pace designed for the guy the team thinks can win. They put him out front running 4 minute and 30 sec miles (or whatever pace they have to have) and the rest of the team chases the rabbit until the end of the race when its time to kick it and run to win.

A rabbit in any distance foot race is a person who sets a specific pace for the world class runners in order to insure a time for the race. The rabbit generally falls back into the pack or drops out of the race after his job is done.

it leads the rest of the running pack, and set the pace for the race. The rabbit is a good runner, but he/she is not actually going to finish the race.

To burn out the competition early with speed.
So his mates have a better chance over the distance.

Funny though I have seen a few rabbits actually win.
Rare but very cool when it goes down.
