I am ironing, and there is a brown liquid that sometimes comes out of my iron and is staining my clothes (its like dirty water) - does anyone know what this is and how to stop it?

Sometimes when you put water in your iron, to steam the clothes, all of it doesnt get used. The excess water may build up rust inside the iron, so when you go to use it the left over water mixes with the rust and insted of water comeing out you have a water and rust mixture. You may have to take your iron apart and clean it, or you may have to get a new iron, depending on the type you have already. Some can be cleaned and others you just have to throw away.

Sounds like you didn't use distilled water in the iron and rusted out the inside.

Since rust is a chemical reaction, it will be about impossible to clean it out fully.

Best thing to do is buy a new iron and a gallon of distilled water to sit beside it.

As a kid I always wondered why mom kept a gallon of water in the laundry room....now I know...after a few irons myself.

your iron needs de-scaling either read your instructions or if you don't av any you need to fill the water tank up put the iron on maximum switch it on when the red light goes out un-plug hold your iron over the sink with the steam button pressed in until the tank is empty or water stops coming out the bottom if its still the same repeat again if this fails throw it out and buy a new one

hope this helps my wife does it all the time

It is rust left from the mineral deposits from having had tap water sit in the reservoir. Depending on the type of iron you have, you can try to empty it and let it dry out entirely... and then possibly wipe it out. I would look at it and then try that. Otherwise I'm afraid that you're going to have to get a new one. (and this time only use distilled water from now on.)

Sounds like rust from water left over from previous iron use. Try to rinse the water container of your iron, or get a new one and don't leave water in it.

There are many minerals in our water. I would think that iron is what you are seeing. You need to clean out your iron. Check the manual on how to do this for your iron and clean it out (especially if it has been sitting) when you see the mineral ( iron on a cloth first) or you can use distilled water........Hope this helps you out hun......Flo

I think it's the mineral deposits in the water. Occasionally instead of using tap water, use distilled (bottled water). Hopefully someone will know how to clean it out, or just get a new iron.

Iron/calcium from your water supply or from rusting parts inside the iron. Use distilled water only in your iron and you should be okay.

Sounds like its rusting away inside. Always empty out any water before storing it away.
Time to purchase a new iron perhaps?
