I've heard of couples with really cheap wedding/engagement rings or just none at all...

Yes, it happens. But I've found the "cheap" rings usually mean more than the expensive ones.

When my husband and I got married, we were poor college students with no jobs so he couldn't afford an engagement ring. On our honeymoon, we went to a small antique store and saw a beautiful ring -- it was bright green crystal set in sterling silver -- and it was $10. The man we bought it from warned it was expensive. Since my husband had $10, he got me the ring and to this day we refer to it as my "very expensive ring". Although he now has a good job and we are no longer poor, I love that ring and will never get another one. For me, it is worth more than all the gold and diamonds in the world.

My engagement ring is a part of the wedding band, they interlock. I received both of them at the same time & have worn both of them since the day he asked me to marry him. I think a ring of some sort is needed when asking, even if it is the one you wear as a wedding band. It is, after all, a sign of committment. I would want people to know, see, notice that I was engaged and had made that committment to my guy. Oh, and the price/cost doesn't matter. Its the thought that counts.

Many people do not use an engagement ring but opt to just use a single wedding band. Marriage is not about the rings.

I didn't get an engagement ring because I really didn't want one and money was tight. We got very simple white gold bands. He bought me the wedding set of my dreams after we were married three years.

I didn't have an engagement ring. I have a wedding band, a custom made one as a matter of fact.

I don't feel any real loss at not having one. Mostly what I hear from ladies who do have one is the story of how she received it, not what it looks like or carat size. It doesn't need to be expensive to make a story.

My wedding band:
------------ yellow gold band
---oOo--- white gold band w/ diamond, alexandrite, diamond
------------ yellow gold band
