why do animals do that thing where they like walk around in a circle before they lie down? (whenever my dog does that it makes me really dizzy)

They try and see which side and direction is more comfortable for them at the time. As you watch them they will get up and move every time the become uncomfortable .

Actually animals (mostly dogs) walk in circles before they lay down is because a long time ago they lived in the wild and did not have any house to sleep in, so some of the wild dogs/animals layed in grass (which was not mowed, hence it was long) so they would walk in circles to break down the grass so that it would not poke or prode them once they laid down.

It's a throw back to the wild days. First it give them a 360 degree look at the surroundings to make sure its a safe place to sleep and second to mat down the area. Remember dogs and wolves are the same DNA, it's only a few centuries of living with humans that has changed them.

They are doing that to check for sharp objects or things
that might poke or injure them when they lay down.
