Because they gave him a stupid contract, and no other team wants him so they can't get rid of him via a trade. They're only option is to keep him or waive him (which means they'd still have to pay him...which they don't want to do)...

I really can't give you a good answer for that, because I've been wondering the same thing for two years. Even stranger than keeping him on the team was the fact that our first pick this year Shannon Brown was inactive for the home opener while Newble was on the team. How does that make sense?
