A lot of people will tell you iguanas are mean, but a lot of people don't handle their ig, they just give it food and leave it in its cage. Prism is right about the overbreading and underpriced part. Iguana's are cheap to buy, but expensive to keep, so people get the pretty 15 dollar lizard, but doesnt care for it properly, so the iguana gets mean. If you handle your ig regularly and care for it, it will not get mean.
HOWEVER even a 'tame' iguana can whip and bite. you need to know when your ig wants to be left alone. When your ig gets bigger you will notice that some days you pet him, and he doesnt mind, but sometimes you go in there, and he will start to bob his head... just walk away, just like humans, they have times where they just want to be left alone. If you respect their space, and know when they want to be left alone, you will be fine.

Iguanas are not mean. the people that have told you that have probably only been around the ones that haven't been taken care of and raised properly. The first year is the hardest part of raising an iguana. This is where it's up to the owner to get them out of the habits that they are born with. You have to spend a lot of time with them in the first year, or they can become very un social. The reason iguanas are not pets for beginners is because of the things I've said above, plus they require a complex diet to keep them strong and healthy, they are also one of the most intelligent of the reptile species so they learn from their experiences. if not taken care of right, all these things can be a bad combination. If they are raised right, they will without a doubt, be the best pet you've ever owned. i have a four year old male that is 6 feet long. he is the most docile and friendly iguana I've ever known. When he was a baby, I trained him not to bite or whip his tail which has benefitted me tremendously. Before you ever even think about getting an iguana, you need to do research. I recommend ordering the book "Iguanas For Dummies". This will tell you everything you need to know on taking care of and raising them.

You may think that they are mean but they are not. Iguanas are very teritoial animals and this means what they want to protect they protect. Iguanas are not a very good family pet because they are know to get attatched to one member of the family and want to protect them (they will bite and whip people with their tails if they think this will make the other person go away) other than that they are the sweetest things.

When a male iguana is in his breeding season (1-2 months in the summer) he will think EVERYTHING is a rival male iguana, and attack it. People. Furniture. His own water bowl. Anything he sees.

Iguanas are not mean. They are wild animals doing what they do naturally. The reason they're so popular...because they farmed in mass quantities and sell cheap...and people think they're cool.
It's very sad...:-(
