I am looking to change my 'super ancient' hot water furnace. My house has two bedroom and 5 radiators. It is about 2150 sq feet. The furnace has modern connections per code, but has that old water tank hanging above it. I am in the process of calling companies, but I wanted to know what price ranges I should expect to pay for the boiler and total installation and what kinds of things I should ask so that I look like I know what I am talking about. I live in the NE United States.

My boiler is at 20-30 years old and I don't want to be without heat if it conks out in the dead of winter. My radiators look okay, are well sealed etc. I only expect to replace the boiler and expansion tank.

High efficiency is not imperative as my husband and I plan to move to a bigger house in 5 or 6 years. The major reason for replacing the current heater is that I don't expect it to be worth it to have parts replaced when the boiler breaks down.
