I'm a stay at home mom, and my kids are all finally in school, and now I want to go to college. I've tried going over to the community college here to talk to a counselor, but there never seems to be one available. I'm not sure what I want to major in, are there basic classes I have to take? What about finances? My husband is in the military and he doesn't make too much.

Okay, the first thing you need to get into college is .... a reason.

Check around where you are and find where you can take an "aptitude test". Perhaps there are some online. I think you might find some in bookstores. The idea is that you take a battery of tests and it will identify what YOU like to do, what you'd be happy with doing. Sometimes people are surprised, and sometimes it reinforces what they always wanted but never felt they could achieve.

Know where you want to be, then find someone who is doing that, and talk to them about how they got there. People love talking about themselves, this isn't as hard as you may expect.

By the time you get through that (and you could have both of those done in less than two weeks if you get moving on it now) you will know what you need to major in, and you won't need the college counselors, who don't have any idea what YOU want to do or how you get there anyway.

First, you have to decide what you want to major in. If, at this point, you can´t, start by studying by yourself. On the web you will find thousands of different options. Choose one and go for it.

If you are persistent, determined and hard-working, you will be able to get into college.

there are basic classes to take. ask the admissions person for a list of them. the new semester starts somewhat soon, so you are in luck. community college classes are somewhat cheap. if you need help, you can ask the financial aid.
